A Community-Based Approach to Driving Circularity
Rethinking Recycling, the flagship initiative of Delterra, is focused on establishing a globally scalable model to help communities to rapidly increase the amount of material recycled into productive use.
We achieve this by unlocking both the supply and the demand side of the recycling value chain: on the supply side, we create impact by developing and scaling self-sustaining, community owned recycling programs; while, on the demand side, we work with corporate players to ensure that the supply of all recycled material can be reliably absorbed at a fair price on an ongoing basis.
Rethinking Recycling Academy
To bolster and scale our work on the supply side, we have launched Rethinking Recycling Academy, an innovative hybrid initiative of digitally-delivered capability building, on-the-ground implementation support, and access to up-front capital that catalyzes the transformation of waste management systems in local communities.
The academy directly partners with villages to transform their Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), known locally as TPS3Rs, by working hand-in-hand with government officials, waste collectors, local implementation partners and multinational industry players. The approach enables village leaders to drive community behaviour change, ramp up collection of recyclables and achieve financial stability in otherwise idle MRFs, thus, providing a sustainable and impactful solution to communities’ waste challenges.
